WCU's Film Archives and How to Use and Access Them

By Liz Willis

As a student at Western Carolina University, using the library for resources is essential for class work. From checking out books, to using the computers or various technologies, and using the streaming services provided by Western, Hunter Library has your back. Hunter Library has a collection of many streaming services, the main ones being Kanopy, Swank, and Feature Films for Education. These streaming services are easy to access in a very simple process for us students. In this blog, I will have a How-To guide on how you as a student can access these streaming services.

There are two main ways to access them as a student. One way is to login to your MyWCU account and look to the right hand side of the web page. There you will find a box labeled as “Quick Links”. From there, click the icon that has an image of a book that is labeled as “Hunter Library”. You will be taken to the Hunter Library web page. Next, click on the icon that looks like a film roll that is labeled as “Streaming Video”. There, you will then be given the option to pick from WCU’s selection of streaming services. Another way to access the streaming services from WCU is to go to the web browser of your choosing and type in “Western Carolina University Hunter Library ''. You will be brought to the Hunter Library page, where you can then click on the film roll icon to access the streaming services. You will be able to pursue the selections freely and at your time of choosing.

Personally, I believe Kanopy is the strongest streaming platform out of the main three. Kanopy has a wide selection for films to review and has some great information on the film, like the different genres associated with the film, what languages are used, what studio worked on the film, the directors, actors/actresses, and tags that apply to the film. Kanopy has a tool that allows you to cite the film you are reviewing in APA, MLA, Chicago, and Harvard citation styles. Swank has its own variety of films as well. While it does not have a citation feature or as much detail on the film as Kanopy does, it is still a reliable resource for films. Swank does have a feature that allows you to copy the link to the movie. Feature Films for Education has films sectioned out by genre and allows you to copy the link. Feature Films for Education definitely provides the least amount of information, but does still have a good selection of films to review. Kanopy would be the streaming service I would recommend the most for assignments.

Overall, these streaming services are reliable resources for classes you may be taking or just for your own viewing or class assignments. The large selections of films vary from older films to current films, leaving you with plenty of movies to peruse. I highly recommend utilizing this tool while you have it as a student here at Western Carolina University.
